Rochester gets a sneak peek of summer

Western New Yorkers often wait through months of snow and ice until April or May to break out the sandals, the boats, the grills and the sundresses, but that's not the case this year.

This week, warm and sunny weather in Rochester could break more records with temperatures nearing 80 degrees.

Today, temperatures will hover in the 70s, with possible showers and thunderstorms hitting later in the day. Monday could see similar patterns.

But by Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures will be in the upper 70s, with lows predicted in the upper 50s, positioning to break record highs for March temperatures in the area.

The heat wave may not last long, with temperatures dropping off to the upper 60s on Friday and Saturday of this week, and the possibility of scattered showers.

St. Patty's Day Parade brings over 150,000; record-breaking for Rochester

St. Patty's Day Parade brings over 150,000; record-breaking for Rochester

It was a sea of green all day on East Avenue as thousands showed up to the 35th annual Saint Patty's day parade.

Event coordinators say this is the biggest parade ever put together by the City of Rochester. They estimate over 150,000 people showed up Saturday.

The parade wrapped up late afternoon, but people stuck around to celebrate in downtown Rochester.

It was almost record-high temperatures and not a cloud in the sky. It is no wonder why people took advantage of the outdoors on this year’s holiday.

There was music, food and dozens of floats from local businesses and organizations participated in the event.

The parade began at noon but event coordinators told News10NBC thousands showed up hours earlier. They say the crowds just kept on coming in after that..

Thousands of people spent the day enjoying the festivities and, of course, the perfect weather.

Three Republicans qualify for U.S. Senate primary ballot

Three Republicans qualify for U.S. Senate primary ballot

After two rounds of voting by delegates at the New York Republican Party convention in Rochester, three candidates qualified to get on the June primary ballot.

New York lawyer Wendy Long got 47-percent of the vote. Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos got 27-percent of the vote and Rep. Bob Turner - who jumped into the race just recently - got 25-percent of the vote.

Candidates need 25-percent to get on the ballot. Since no one got 50-percent of the votes, there is no official party designee.

The winner of June's primary election will challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in November.

Local police agencies team up to stop drunk drivers this weekend

Local police agencies team up to stop drunk drivers this weekend

As thousands of people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day Saturday, Monroe County Sheriff's Deputies will be targeting drunk drivers throughout the area.

Monroe County is making this its number one priority this weekend. They want people to enjoy the gorgeous weather, the food and the festivities but they also want people to think before they drink.

While bars are bracing themselves for big crowds, local law enforcement agencies are bracing themselves for a busy weekend.

Portion of University Avenue to close

A portion of University Avenue will be closed while construction crews commence work on the University Avenue Improvements and Artwalk II Enhancement Project.

The project, which began last year, will shutdown westbound traffic in the direction of North Goodman Street to Union Street beginning Monday, March 19. The westbound detour will be via North Goodman Street to Main Street and then to University Avenue.

University Avenue will remain open to eastbound traffic in the direction of Union Street to North Goodman Street during the work.

However, westbound and eastbound traveling public should expect some delays during the work; the detour will remain in effect until the project's completion.

All work is expected to be complete September 2012.
