Winter: The Coming Highs and Lows

The cold air coming to the Midwest and Northeast over the next 10 days will come in two or three surges with a spell of modestly milder air coming after each surge. This will result from the NAO going negative (please see our first blog in December for terminology explanations) during a developing +PNA pattern. This will allow Siberian air to cross over the North Pole, rush through Canada and then enter the United States via potent arctic fronts.

The –NAO appears likely to have resulted from the stratospheric warming event that we detailed several weeks ago.  The result is going to be more typical winter conditions across the northern third of the country over the next one to two weeks, including air that is colder than normal more times than not and enhanced risks of accumulating snow.  For Rochester and the Finger Lakes this means more snow and more cold than we have seen so far this winter, not that that is saying much.

Three indicted in string of tanning salon robberies

A grand jury has indicted two brothers and a woman accused of robbing several tanning salons all over Monroe County.

Jacob and Jeffrey Buchanan have both been indicted on robbery in the first and second degrees. Sarah Cushman who is the girlfriend of Jacob Buchanan has been indicted on robbery in the first degree.

Police say they hit tanning salons in Greece, Irondequoit, Brighton and Park Avenue in the city. They're accused of robbing some of the locations twice.

Investigators say they were able to track the trio down because a security guard at Maximum Tan Salon on Monroe Avenue got their license plate.

Jacob Buchanan and Cushman are also accused of holding down a 99-year-old Greece man and stealing cash from his home on December 8.

Kodak sues Apple, HTC over patents

Kodak sues Apple, HTC over patents

Eastman Kodak Co. has filed patent-infringement lawsuits against Apple Inc. and HTC Corp., claiming the smartphone makers are infringing several of its digital-imaging inventions.

The lawsuits, filed Tuesday in federal court, claim that some of Apple's iPhones, iPads and iPods and HTC's smartphones and tablet devices infringe four Kodak patents related to image transmission.

It also lodged complaints against Taiwan-based HTC and Apple, of Cupertino, Calif., before the U.S. International Trade Commission, a trade-dispute arbiter in Washington, D.C.

In addition, Kodak accuses HTC of infringing the same image-preview technology at the heart of a two-year-old dispute pending before the commission with Apple and Research in Motion.

The embattled photography pioneer is trying to negotiate a licensing deal with Apple and RIM it estimates could be worth up to $1 billion.

Redistricting maps for NYS Senate, Assembly could be released soon

Redistricting maps for the New York State Assembly and Senate could be released by the end of this month and they're likely to include a new seat in the senate.

The 63rd seat would serve as a tie-breaker in a chamber that has, at times, been paralyzed by deadlocked votes.

Senate democrats are accusing republicans of trying to save their slim majority. The GOP has a 32 to 30 advantage in the Senate right now.

Once the new boundaries are proposed, there will be public hearings across the state including one in Rochester.
