Local shops prepare for Small Business Saturday

While Friday is a big sales day for major retailers, Saturday is all about those local, small shops. Shoppers are of course looking for deals, but they are also looking to support their community. News10NBC spoke to small business owners and managers about what Small Business Saturday. They say they are ready for the rush.

"We are prepared as we can be," says Daniel Jacken, operation manager of Parkleigh. "The store is stocked full as it can be with product right now. We have guys working out in the parking lot that are helping get in and out of park spaces because it gets a little crazy out here."

This is the third year stores have participated in Small Business Saturday. In 2010, American Express started the movement to encourage consumers to spend their money at local shops instead of big box retailers and the movement has caught on since then.

Former Super Bowl Champion speaks at Greece church

Lakeshore Community Church in Greece hosted a Super Bowl champion on Sunday.

Former New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree was in the area giving a talk on overcoming hardships. Tyree, best known for his amazing helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII, talked about how he preserved through challenges in his life and the role his faith has played.

Tyree is one of a number of sports stars asked to come be a part of the church's "Making A Comeback" series. Senior Pastor Vince DiPaola believes hearing these personal stories will help his congregation apply those same principles in their own lives.

"I went from struggling with substance abuse, alcohol addiction," says Tyree. "You know, I guess you could say typical challenges of an inner city black kid. Coming through even an arrest in '04 and going through a total transformation when I first met Christ and that's preserved my NFL career and laid the foundation for me to be a Super Bowl champion."
