Sahlen's Stadium lease changed

Tuesday night, City Council voted to change the terms of the lease for Sahlen's Stadium. It's a move that will save the City money.

The stadium is rented by the Adirondack Sports Club which owns the Rochester Rhinos. Right now, the club pays pay $1 a year to lease the stadium. Under the new lease agreement, it will pay $20,000 next year and gradually cover more operating costs with the goal of paying all of them by 2019.

Zumbathon raises more than $2,000 for Grape Street fire victims

The Rochester Zumba community came together to help the families who affected by a devastating fire in February.

Gage Reavey and his siblings Greg, Kandee and Kaiden Kugler died in a fire when their home caught fire on Grape Street. Three other people were injured in the fire.

On Saturday, more than 15 Zumba instructors and dozens of Zumba enthusaists came together at the Adams Street Recreation Center to raise money for the families.

The Zumbathon raised more than $2,000 for the families.

 

Community will unite at candlelight vigil for Larie Butler

The medical examiner has still not positively identified the body found in an Irondequoit pool Thursday.
    
Police believe it's the Rochester teenager who went missing last Sunday. Saturday night her family is holding a vigil in her memory.

Police arrested Devante Lively in connection with the disappearance of 17-year-old Larie Butler. Lively is charged with second degree murder.

Butler's friends and family plan to get together to remember her. 

There is footage of the pool where police discovered a body believed to be Larie Butler. Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Boyan told us he does not believe the body was sexually assaulted but the victim did have severe blunt force trauma to the upper body.

Police have combed the area for the last two days in search of the weapon used in the attack. The teenager went missing a week ago Saturday.

Pancake breakfast fundraiser with the Easter Bunny

A pancake breakfast with the Easter Bunny will be held in honor of Jovani Perez -- a Rochester-area child who needs a kidney transplant.

The event is planned for March 31st, at Toddler’s Workshop and Railroad Junction in Webster, from 8: 30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The event includes breakfast and a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny.

Five-month-old Jovani is scheduled to receive a kidney transplant at Children’s Hospital in Boston.  Funds are being raised to assist with transplant-related expenses.  

Tickets are $13 per adult and $7 per child.

Christopher's Challenge Hike for Life

Two men who lost their lives to cancer will be honored this weekend at the 11th Annual Hike for Life, sponsored Christopher’s Challenge and Strong’s Blood and Marrow Transplant Program on Sunday, March 25. The Hike for Life will be held in memory of Gene Martello, from Seneca Falls, and Tony Canali, from Canandaigua. Both men were in need of bone marrow transplants, and were dedicated supporters of Christopher's Challenge and believed in the mission of getting more people typed to be potential bone marrow donors.

Tony Canali, a guidance counselor and rugby and indoor track coach for McQuaid Jesuit, lost his battle with AML Leukemia in 2009 on his 60th birthday. Gene Martello passed away in 2006 after a brave fight with multiple myeloma. Gene’s son, Mark Martello, became a bone marrow donor last year after taking part in a bone marrow drive at a Christopher’s Challenge Hike for Life the previous year. He is hoping to meet his recipient soon.

U of R Yellowjackets to perform for Ontario ARC's Open Our Bottle Night

The University of Rochester YellowJackets will perform at Ontario ARC's inaugural fundraiser, Open Our Bottle Night, on March 23 at the New York Wine & Culinary Center.

The evening will feature fine wines from across the world and New York State, gourmet cuisine grazing stations, along with exciting live and silent auctions.

Ontario ARC's fundraiser is based on the widely popular Open That Bottle Night celebrated internationally in February.

Tickets are $125 each and proceeds benefit Ontario ARC's Pet Connections - a new and innovative pet therapy program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Ontario County.

RIT students help feed Rochester’s needy with annual PB Jam

The paper hats and plastic knives may not be high tech, but student, faculty and staff volunteers from RIT will be working to provide more than 2,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to those in need.

The annual PB Jam will be held 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. today at RIT’s Student Alumni Union.

Organizers hope volunteers can successfully assemble thousands of sandwiches in the sic-hour time frame and deliver them to Rochester-area organizations such as Open Door Mission, Freddie Thomas Foundation, House of Mercy and Togetherness in Love Community.

PB Jam is a community effort -- the bread, peanut butter and jelly will be donated by Foodlink and Wegmans.
