"Match day" at University of Rochester Medical Center

It was a sight to see -- shouts of joy from medical students at the University or Rochester after wrapping up four years of hard work.

It's not graduation – it’s “match day” -- the day fourth-year medical students across the country find out where they'll be matched for the next few years of their lives as resident doctors.

Two friends told News 10NBC they hoped to be in the same city for their residencies. The two women grew up in the Rochester area and it was always their dream to go medical school at the U of R.

They met before orientation and spent the next four years together but everyone could feel the tension in the room as they and more than a hundred of their classmates waited to hear their fate today.

It's a safe bet most of the medical students were feeling the same emotions as they waited for the clock to strike 12.

Wegmans, Tyson donate 29,000 pounds of food to Foodlink

Wegmans, Tyson donate 29,000 pounds of food to Foodlink

Foodlink is helping to keep food on families' tables and today they got a huge donation.

Crews unloaded 29,000 pounds of boneless Tyson chicken and it’s all thanks to Tyson and Wegmans. The chicken is worth more than $100,000.

This is part of Tyson’s “Know Hunger” campaign. The goal is to get people to know the scope of hunger in their communities.

Mike Gulvin of Tyson said, “Within the last three months, one in four Americans has some serious concerns about having enough money available to buy food.”

Tom Ferraro of Foodlink said, “To be able to get this kind of quality product -- Tyson chicken breast, boneless chicken breast type of product -- is what we don't ever see enough of.”

3 aspiring doctors serving up hope for local cancer patients

3 aspiring doctors serving up hope for local cancer patients

It's a typical night for University of Rochester medical students Emily Berkman, Jamie Adams and Michelle Coriddi. They're cooking up a healthy meal.

But these students aren't making this food for themselves, they are making it for Paul Dalton whose wife has kidney cancer, John Baxter who is recovering from a liver transplant and Wayne Wells who is struggling with cancer.

They're all undergoing treatment in Rochester and they're staying at the Hope Lodge Hospitality House on the Colgate Divinity Campus on Goodman Street.

“Coming and talking with these people who are struggling with a lot more than we are, kind of helps us to keep our head on our shoulders.” Emily Berkman started the program last summer at the Hope Lodge called "SNACKS" -- Serving Nutritious and Appetizing Cuisine to the Kin of the Sick.

Every Thursday, the medical students do just that.

Local veterans have new option for companion pet adoption

Local veterans now have a new option for companion pet adoption.

Pets for Patriots -- a registered charity that helps military members honorably adopt adult and at-risk shelter pets -- is partnering with Lollypop Farm to place hard-to-adopt dogs and cats into loving military homes.

Individuals are welcome from all United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers. Joining this program for veterans is free.

Eligible pets must meet one of three criteria: an adult dog or cat (two years and older), dogs more than 40 pounds regardless of age, or special needs dogs and cats.

Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service or honorable discharge. After approval is received, veterans can visit Lollypop Farm for help in choosing their new best friend.

Henrietta Animal Hospital will also offer discounted veterinary care to animals adopted through this program.
