Local minister and civil rights figure honored

A celebration in Rochester Friday night honored a prominent civil rights figure in our community.

More than 750 people were at the Riverside Convention Center to pay tribute to Minister Franklin Florence. Minister Florence is senior pastor at Central Church of Christ on Plymouth Avenue.

He helped to form the organization "F.I.G.H.T." after the Rochester riots, addressing issues like unemployment and housing.

The event featured keynote speaker Jesse Jackson Jr. and News10NBC's own Janet Lomax served as emcee.

Hundreds of volunteers put on some gloves and picked up some tools to kick of the first Clean Sweep of the spring at Edgerton Park in the city. The event is similar to a spring cleaning for the City of Rochester.

More than 600 volunteers showed up to the park Saturday morning to clean up the city's northwest side. Organizers and volunteers told News10NBC 15 tons of debris was picked up.

There were also more than two dozen beautification projects like planting flowers and cleaning up graffiti.

One of the team captains, Wayne Watts, told us, “We think that it beautifies the place. It will let people know we have something rich here. If we put a little work behind it and beautify it a little bit it could be very appealing. It could be a beautiful place to live.”

House of Mercy fundraises for bigger facility

A local group dedicated to helping the homeless held its first ever fundraiser Friday night.

The House of Mercy says there was a huge turnout at the event, which was all the raise money for a new facility.

The House of Mercy is currently on Hudson Avenue and organizers hope to stay in the same area. It's open 24 hours a day, and takes in anyone who needs a place to stay.

Sister Grace Miller says the new facility is needed badly. "We have over 4,000 people a month who come to the House of Mercy. And the facility we have now is not adequate enough for our people. It's crowded, and we're glad to have the people, but we need a better facility."

There's no timeline yet for when the House of Mercy could move. They're hoping to build an all-new facility, but say that would take 6 to 7-million dollars.

RCSD Superintendent quality: Parent wants more than just graduation rate increases

It was the community's first opportunity to get close and get personal.

Parent, Ernest Flagler Mitchell wants someone who can do more than just improve graduation statistics.

“We just don't want graduation rates -- We really want our kids to be able to compete in this society.”

These music teachers say they're looking for a superintendent who has done just that.

Allison Skvarla, Music Teacher, told us, “…Support for a well rounded education including physical education and library services and arts education for all children really to make the schools more attractive than the streets.”

Retired educator Margo Watts says the next superintendent should know how to address the issue of poverty and other social issues.

“Someone who's really strong in school improvement -- someone who understand the fact of poverty which is one of the causes for our children not achieving.”

While many families spent Easter saying hello to family and friends they may not have seen in a while -- others spent the afternoon saying good bye to family leaving on a medical mission trip.

Eight students boarded an American Airlines flight to Kenya Sunday. The students were surrounded by family members at the airport and they were in pretty good spirits.

The students are in their senior year at the Wegmans School of Nursing at Saint John Fisher College and as part of their last clinical trial -- they get the chance to travel to Kenya for hands-on experience. Several students get the opportunity to go over seas every year but eight students and two professors left the U.S. around 4:00 p.m. Sunday.
