Rochester man indicted for attempted murder of pregnant teen

A 23-year-old Rochester man has been indicted by a Monroe County Grand Jury for the attempted murder of a pregnant teen.

Samuel Smith was indicted on second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and criminal use of a firearm.

On May 20, police say Smith shot 17-year-old Paris Bullock on Danforth Street. She was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment.

First Assistant District Attorney Kelly Wolford said, “Anyone who would produce a handgun and shoot another person in the street in broad daylight is clearly a threat to the community, but to perpetrate such a crime against an unarmed, pregnant woman is particularly callous. Samuel Smith’s alleged actions are those of a person with no regard for the lives of others, and I look forward to prosecuting him and helping to make our streets safer.”

Smith is in the Monroe County Jail in lieu of bail.

Rochester man to spend 25 years to life in prison for attempting to murder 96-year-old woman

A Rochester man was sentenced Friday for choking an 96-year-old woman in her own home and leaving her for dead.

Judge James Piampiano sentenced 57-year-old Michael Ross to 25 years to life in prison after adjudicating him a persistent violent felon. He was convicted of second degree murder and second degree strangulation in the assault of Vernice Warfield in May 2011.

Ross was helping Warfield, who he had known for years, clean windows in her Herkimer Street home when he violently attacked her, strangling her until she lost consciousness. Ross left the scene, but Warfield eventually regained consciousness and called police. Police were able to find Ross a short time later due to the fact that he was wearing a GPS ankle bracelet as a condition of his most recent parole.

In addition to the life sentence, Ross was issued a 100 year order of protection preventing him from contacting Warfield.
