Residents are fed up with the violence | Crime

News10NBC has been tracking crime in Rochester all week and on Thursday night, there was another homicide in the city. 

24-year-old James Florence was shot and killed on Carl Street. That makes seven homicides in June alone. 

An hour after that, police say two groups of people driving cars down Hudson Avenue were shooting at each other from inside the cars. Both cars ended up crashing, one into a curb and the other into a building. 

News10NBC spoke with people who live on Agnes Street where a man was shot earlier in the week. People say they don’t want to fight anymore, they would rather just leave. 

Ida Smith has lived on Agnes Street off Hudson Avenue for five years. She’s fed up with the shootings and the violence. Just Monday night, a 22-year-old was shot a few hundred yards from her door. 

Smith said, “You never know, we're walking out the door, we're innocent people, we could get hurt. So I just really want to get out of this neighborhood.” 

Smith’s neighbor just buried his 21-year-old son. Devoughn Hernandez-Ruffin was shot the night of Father’s Day downtown after a concert at the Bug Jar. He died at the hospital. Police have not arrested his killer.

Elvis Hernandez, father of murder victim, said, “When the police taped off the area. That is being taped off from my front fence across the street. It's just a constant reminder that the shooters still out there walking freely. I'm just hoping and praying that he would come forward.”

Meanwhile it hurts Hernandez to see more violence, right on his street. But it’s not just happening on the city’s northeast side. Rochester Police were called to Vanauker Street just after noon Friday. A man fired a shotgun in the air, sending a mother of two running indoors.

Stella Lindsey, of Rochester, said, “It's very frustrating. You see it everyday on the news never think it will happen right in front of you. I'm sitting right here, just having a good time and all of a sudden out of nowhere, but yeah it's scary.”

Lindsey say she’s been in this neighborhood since January and she’s ready to move. Witnesses say a young man was beaten up by a group of other young men. Police think he went home, got a shotgun and fired a round. Police think it was a show of force to send a message and say to stop further violence they need the community’s help. 

Captain Tony McMullen, Rochester Police Department, said, “We're responding after the fact, so it’s incumbent upon the people who were here to share what they know as best as they can.”

There have been 20 homicides overall. Out of those 20 cases, police have identified the suspects in only five of them and there have been no arrests in the cases in June. That’s why they are appealing to the community to come forward.
