Dr. Sobel and Dr. Seuss

Dr. Sobel and Dr. Seuss

Rochester oncologist Dr. Sidney Sobel has a soft spot for Dr. Seuss's The Sneetches.

It's a story he read to his children years ago--about some star bellied yellow creatures--and some with no stars.

It's a story he says, stands out.

"The starred bellied Sneetches feel superior and prey upon or are very rude to and very mean to and exclude the plain bellied Sneetches."

Dr. Sobel uses words like discrimination, bias, and bigotry in describing parts of the story's message. He says it's one he experienced growing up.

" I was small, I was a very small kid and I experienced bullying based on my physical size but also ethnically."

The events that shaped his life also shaped a personal commitment from him to find a way to change the world.

Now, decades later, he's found the instrument to do help do that--music.

New show: Big Fat Italian Wedding, hosted in Rochester's East End Theater

Tuesday, May 3 marks the world preview of the Calamari Sisters’ new show, Big Fat Italian Wedding.

Carmela and Delphine Calamari are fresh from their sold-out engagements across the country and will make their triumphant return to Rochester their world premiere.

The sisters first bulldozed their way onto the musical comedy scene in 2009 on Cooking with the Calamari Sisters (a Downstairs Cabaret Theater hit) :followed up by their sold-out 2010 holiday show, Christmas with the Calamari Sisters.

The new musical takes those same classic ingredients - popular tunes, crazy comedy and loveable characters then stirs in a big dollop of wedding drama.

Delphine and Carmela will sing, dance and cook their way through such favorites as "Chapel of Love," "Love and Marriage," and "Daddy's Little Girl," with - as always - some tasty surprises for the audience.

"Being back in Rochester, with a brand new show and a wedding buffet?!?  I'm so exci

Community will unite at candlelight vigil for Larie Butler

The medical examiner has still not positively identified the body found in an Irondequoit pool Thursday.

Police believe it's the Rochester teenager who went missing last Sunday. Saturday night her family is holding a vigil in her memory.

Police arrested Devante Lively in connection with the disappearance of 17-year-old Larie Butler. Lively is charged with second degree murder.

Butler's friends and family plan to get together to remember her.

There is footage of the pool where police discovered a body believed to be Larie Butler. Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Boyan told us he does not believe the body was sexually assaulted but the victim did have severe blunt force trauma to the upper body.

Police have combed the area for the last two days in search of the weapon used in the attack. The teenager went missing a week ago Saturday.
