Dentist's office on wheels helps the homeless

Dentist's office on wheels helps the homeless

It's a 40-foot dentist's office... on wheels! Each week, it travels to shelters, caring for 8,000 homeless adults and children in the Rochester area. Unity Health System's medical unit has been around for years, but now, there's a brand new unit that provides dental services.

The professionals who took the job say it's challenging, but rewarding.

"It's heart wrenching," says dental assistant Regina Washington. "Once you restore a person's smile and their confidence, it makes you feel good."

The mobile unit has everything you'd see in a dentist's office, including the nervous patients.

Doctor Scott Watson says he and his team have the resources to do full x-rays, fillings, cleanings, exams and extractions.

breathe raises $20,000 for Haiti, $11,000 raised at November 12 fundraiser

On Saturday, Nov. 12, breathe kicked off the launch of its new downtown annex at 930 East Ave. in the Hutchison House and hosted a benefit for its 2011 Seva Challenge, a fund-raising program breathe participates in annually to raise money for a country-in-need. The event featured music by local artist, Angelo Rose; food by breathe and the Good Food Collective; and a silent auction.  About 250 people attended the event, which raised nearly $11,000 for the program. Proceeds helped breathe meet its $20,000 fund-raising goal to help those in Haiti affected by the 2010 earthquake. Wow!

For four years, breathe has aligned with Off the Mat, Into the World (OTM)’s annual Seva Challenge ("Seva" means "service).

Hot Water and Healthy Living

When you step into a hot tub, the calming effects of the warm water are felt almost instantly. Your muscles relax and stress seems to slip away. Many people use hot water immersion as a way to relieve stress and pain, and improve their overall health. A number of doctors and physical therapist recommend water therapy, especially warm water therapy, for their patients. With more than 5 million hot tubs in the United States, many people can enjoy the benefits of hot water therapy, or immersion, from the comfort of their own homes.

Thompson Health, University of Rochester may join forces

Two of the region’s biggest health-care operations — Thompson Health and the University of Rochester Medical Center — are in talks about formalizing an affiliation, a move the chief executives of each organization say could save money and improve quality and access to care.

The marriage between the rural community health system and the Monroe County academic medical center would combine the best out of what each has to offer, officials say. Discussions continue this week with meetings among top board members, administrators and medical staff of each organization on whether an affiliation could also help the two entities deal with obstacles such as the reduction of government reimbursements that pay for care.

“We need to make services more regional,” said Dr. Bradford Berk, chief executive officer of URMC during a conference call at Thompson on Monday.

Isaiah House shutting down?

The Isaiah House has been a part of Rochester for 25 years but could be shutting down because of the economy.

Those who have experienced hospice care for dying family members know how valuable it is. Isaiah House takes people with no more than three months to live and it costs $8,000 to care for each patient. Isaiah House is almost out of funds.

Bill Andrews’ wife is terminally ill. She has a very aggressive form of brain cancer and was diagnosed in March.

Andrews spends his nights at the Isaiah House at his wife’s side. He says, “The volunteers here do a much better job than we did at home.”
