Snow weighs down on the lilacs

Snow weighs down on the lilacs

First, it was the lilacs and the freeze. Then it was the lilacs blooming too soon when temperatures soared in the 80’s. Now the flowers are draped in snow.

News10NBC talked with Mark Quinn who oversees the lilacs in Highland Park. He says probably around five to 10% of the shrubs saw some damage. It’s a good amount, but not enough to get him worried and certainly not enough to ruin this year’s Lilac Festival.

Quinn said, “There’s certainly going to be some work out there. Doing some clean up and some of the brushes have some broken branches. First thing, they didn’t look very good. I would say they looked pretty sad, all wilted and pushed to the ground.

Tips on maintaining your spa year-round

Nothing is more relaxing on a cold night than warming up in a spa. To enjoy your spa to the fullest, regular maintenance should be a top priority. Design Pool & Spa offers these five simple steps that will help you keep your spa safe and enjoyable all year round:

Hot Water and Healthy Living

When you step into a hot tub, the calming effects of the warm water are felt almost instantly. Your muscles relax and stress seems to slip away. Many people use hot water immersion as a way to relieve stress and pain, and improve their overall health. A number of doctors and physical therapist recommend water therapy, especially warm water therapy, for their patients. With more than 5 million hot tubs in the United States, many people can enjoy the benefits of hot water therapy, or immersion, from the comfort of their own homes.

Recipes for the last days of summer

Labor Day might be the unofficial end to summer, but if you’re like me, you’re not ready to let go just yet. One part of summer I always miss is fresh fruit and vegetables and all the summer time recipes that can come straight out of the garden.

John Freeze, the executive chef of The Erie Grill at the Renaissance Del Monte Lodge, was nice enough to share some of his favorite recipes right out of The Erie Grill cookbook:

Foodlink farmers' market starts Wednesday

Starting Wednesday, you'll be able to get farm-fresh produce in the heart of Rochester.

The Foodlink farmers' market starts at 11 a.m. Wednesday and goes until 2 p.m. It's at Washington Square Park.

The farmers' market will operate every Wednesday from 11 until 2 throughout the summer.

Historic Gardens at George Eastman House

Historic garden tours

You've probably seen George Eastman's mansion on East Avenue in Rochester but have you seen the gardens?

The father of film had five formal gardens on his 12.5 acre estate. They were used a lot for launch parties for Kodak products including one in 1928 for Kodacolor. Thomas Edison was his special guest.

"He (Edison) stood by his side when Eastman introduced color motion pictures called Kodacolor to the world. They stood in the garden and assumed their position in motion picture history. Eastman with his film and Edison with his cameras," said Dresden Engle of George Eastman House.

The grounds were restored in the 1980's and 90's. You can take a stroll through the historic gardens this summer. George Eastman House garden tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday at 11:30 am and 3 pm and Sundays at 3 pm.
