Rochester Police Chief: Recent shootings fueled by feuds

Rochester Police Chief: Recent shootings fueled by feuds

Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard says a feud is responsible for at least half of the eleven shootings so far this month. Five of the shootings happened in just the last four days.

Rochester Mayor Tom Richards says he’s angry over the recent spate of violence in the city and just a short time ago, Rochester’s Police Chief told News10NBC most of these shootings were fueled by feuds.

The chief identified the two rival groups. One is from the Roycroff-Durnan Street area and the other is from the Bay and Parcels area, both in the northeast part of the city. Chief Sheppard can’t say for sure. But he believes that 50 to 70% of these shootings are the result of this on-going feud.

Just a month ago, Rochester Police told us violent crime was down. Now, 4 shootings in 4 days have left two people dead.

The most recent shooting happened just after 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday near the corner of Smith Street and Grape Street.

News10NBC is told the victim doesn't live in this neighborhood -- that he came by to do a good deed.

But somehow the 25-year-old ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time and it cost him his life.

“He just lost his life over nothing. He came here from Africa. We're not from here. We came here to better ourselves. We didn't come here to die,” the victim’s cousin Agwick Majok told us.

His family is distraught and in shock.

Mountain biker treated for minor injuries after slipping off trail

A 22-year-old man suffered minor injuries after he slipped on a trail and ended up in a ravine. It happened on the bike trail off of Route 590 on Tryon Park.

The victim’s brother tells News10NBC his brother frequently rides his bike on the trails. He said his brother called his father saying he needed help and his father in turn called 911.

Rescue crews say the victim was in a ravine about 50 to 75 feet deep but he was able to climb out. Firefighters readied a rope rescue including a rescue sled but it wasn’t needed.

Family Safety Day this Saturday

The Rochester Police Department and the department's "Do the Right Thing" program will host the first ever Family Safety Day this Saturday.

The safety day will offer free car seat inspections, a rollover crash simulator and a texting crash simulator. There will also be giveaways for bike helmets, bells and whistles.

Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard says this is the perfect time for families to start thinking ahead to summer safety. “With people out enjoying the warm weather, this is a perfect time to provide them with valuable information that would insure a safe summer for all.”

Family safety day will happen this Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Rochester Riverside festival site near the Blue Cross Arena and the Public Safety Building.
