Senator Schumer in Rochester today

Senator Charles Schumer will be in Rochester today.

The senator will be at the Veterans Outreach Center at 12 p.m. to call on the U.S. government to help preserve a key program that helps the center find jobs for hundreds of local veterans.

Right now, there are plans to end funding for the program which would force the center to lay off employees who help train local vets, provide career counseling and help connect them with job openings.

Mayor Richards looks back on first year in office

Mayor Richards looks back on first year in office

It was just a year ago that Tom Richards was sworn in as Rochester’s 66th mayor. So what has his first year been like?

Tom Richards agrees -- he's the most unlikely mayor of Rochester in modern history.

The former chairman of RG&E was lured out of retirement by Bob Duffy to be the city's corporation counsel -- the city's chief attorney.

Four years later, Duffy then tapped Richards to be deputy mayor when Patty Malgieri left and Richards then won an election against a formidable challenger - former Mayor Bill Johnson.

Tom Richards and News10NBC's Ray Levato spent a half-hour together in his office at City Hall. The Mayor thought it was unfair when asked to grade himself after one year in office. "Well, it's unfair in this sense. That's not the way to look at what I do. What is fair to hold me to is what kind of a job am I doing with respect to managing the city given the hand the city's been dealt.

The final Voice of the Customer meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Lake Riley Lodget in Cobb's Hill Park.

The meetings gives city taxpayers a crash course on the budget and allows them to weigh in on the services most important to them.

Mayor Richards has to close a $25-million dollar budget gap in the next budget year.

Will it be the re-birth of Midtown?

Nearly 50 years to the day after Midtown Plaza first opened in Rochester, officials gathered for a groundbreaking at the site.

City, county and state officials were on hand for the groundbreaking of Windstream's new building downtown.

Windstream acquired PAETEC last year.

The Arkansas-based company is going to redevelop the former Seneca building and create office space for about 300 employees.

Nineteen-million is being spent on the project.

Mayor Richards holds "Voice of the Customer" meeting

The pressure is on for Rochester Mayor Tom Richards.

He has two months to put together his budget plan for the coming year and has to close a $25- million gap.

Thursday night, he turned to city residents for ideas. It was the first of four "Voice of the Customer" meetings.

Dozens of people got a brief lesson on the budget, where the City's money comes from and where it goes. Then they broke into groups to talk about possible cuts and to tell city officials what's most important to them.

Rochester business owner Geraldine Dixon said, “I would not like to see things happen to the police department and the fire department, or to our city recreations and libraries. I'm more interested in community development."
