Pettitte ticket frenzy

It’s the hottest ticket in town. Folks lined up early Friday morning outside of Frontier Field to get tickets to see the Yankees Andy Pettitte on Sunday.

Pettitte is making his last minor league appearance before heading back up to the Yankees. A lot has been done the past 24 hours to make this all happen.

In an unprecedented move, the Red Wings moved their regularly scheduled game on Sunday to accommodate the New York Yankees who want go give Andy Pettitte a final tune-up game in the minors before he heads to New York’s rotation next Friday.

The Empire State Yankees were scheduled to play in Batavia, but when the Yankees decided to throw Pettitte, everything changed and that made local baseball fans happy.

The line at Frontier Field wrapped around the stadium before 8:00 a.m. Friday morning.

Leggio poised for playoffs

Leggio poised for playoffs

The playoffs start for real for the Rochester Americans. Every game for the past few weeks have seemed like a playoff game for the Amerks leading up to the start of Thursday’s best of five series with Toronto.

It may be the best compliment for a player to be voted most valuable by your teammates, but Amerks goalie David Leggio insists it is who he tries to be everyday. He earned his starting spot by playing hard and staying consistent.

Leggio has been in the net 23 straight games. He’s started for two months. He says the grind has not tired him out; instead he’s mentally rested and ready to face the Marlies.

Leggio said, “I try to come to the rink and focus, to try and get away and keep my mind busy. Stay off the couch.

Hall of Fame effort

Hall of Fame effort

Local hockey fans are familiar with his name, but rarely get to see him. If you haven’t seen Amerks play-by-play announcer Don Stevens, you might be surprised.

The Amerks suffered a heartbreaking loss Tuesday night in their effort to reach the playoff. Behind the microphone as always, Don Stevens is calling the game. It was Stevens’s induction into the Amerks Hall of Fame last year that changed his life.

Stevens has been perched over the Amerks for the past 26 years. But this year, his voice sounds stronger and less out of breath.

Stevens weighed 350 pounds when he was inducted into the Amerks Hall of Fame last January.

Don Stevens, Amerks Announcer, said, “I saw some videos I was embarrassed by what I saw I knew I had to lose some weight so I finally made up my mind that it was time.”

A year ago, he couldn’t tie his shoes.

The Rochester Red Wings took the field for their first practice of the new season at Frontier Field. It was Media Day for the Wings and the Scranton Yankees, so it was a busy day.

The Rochester Red Wings are focused and ready to make a dramatic turnaround following two awful seasons so sharing their stadium for 37 games with the Scranton Yankees doesn’t seem to be a bother.

Media Day went on as usually for Rochester, the only difference, when the Wings left the field, the Scranton Yankees worked out.

Rochester has a seasoned roster with the addition of 11 new players looking for starting jobs. Top prospect Brian Dozier is fighting for a spot at shortstop and outfielder Joe Benson makes his debut from AA with the Wings.

New manager Gene Glynn says that will only make the team more competitive.

Red Wings manager Gene Glynn said, “Guys from other organizations that are right at the same level.

Three APs keeps her focused. She wants to pursue a career in public health, along with a master’s degree. Kennethea works 20 hours a week at the Strong Museum in guest services, so she’s busy.

But there’s always time for sports. She is a three season athlete, volleyball, indoor and outdoor track.

Wilson said, “Volleyball is my fun sport; more teamwork, more individual.”

She is captain for all three. She holds four records for indoor track, one for outdoor and is a two-time sectional champion.
