The History of the Rochester Weather Station

When I visit schools, I’m often asked how I became interested in the weather. Observing the weather as a high school student and as a college student studying meteorology at Lyndon State College in Vermont played a very important role in my professional growth. Growing up in eastern Massachusetts, I had many opportunities to be an eyewitness to a number of major weather events like Hurricane Gloria in 1985, and the March “Superstorm” of 1993.  I also had the unique opportunity and privilege to work at and intern at the Blue Hill Observatory, which holds the title for the longest, most homogeneous climate record in the United States. They’ve never missed a day of weather observations since April 1, 1885. Now that’s what I call dedication!

Hackerfest takes over Hyatt Hotel

They admit they're geeks but say they're here to protect you.

Hackerfest has taken over the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Rochester. It's one of the largest technology trade shows in the northeast.

Big names are in town including a security ninja at Google -- Bill Rios -- and cyber-security specialist Terry McCorkle.

The seminar is all about information security and technology.

Northland Communications Senior VP Matt Dwyer said, “It goes back to the roots of the geeks that really built what we have today. So it's great that it's Hackerfest but it is serious business too.”

Russ Carr of Dox Electronics said, “Hackers today are not the rebel kid in the basement hacking a system to prove a point or change their grades at school. They're actually organized crime.”

Dox Electronics sponsors this free event. Hackerfest continues until 5 p.m.
